Gallery 38 is excited to participate in Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin America and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles. Led by the Getty, Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA is the latest collaborative effort from arts institutions across Southern California. Jim Cuno, President of the J. Paul Getty Trust, said, “Our ambition is to reveal on an unprecedented scale the diversity and complexity of Latin American and Latino art by looking at key historical moments, movements, and figures, as well as at the variety of contemporary practices that are so abundant today. We are thrilled that the participating galleries will add new insights on modern and contemporary art to the Pacific Standard Time initiative.”

“Pages From A Bahia Diary” is a month-long exhibition of Los Angeles based artist J. Michael Walker’s portrayal and exploration of the Afro-Brazilian people and spiritual culture of Bahia, based on his Sacatar Foundation Fellowship in 2011, an experience so profound that documenting and interpreting it has occupied much of the past six years. The title of the show refers not only to the artist’s record of his experiences, but also to the antiquarian text on which he draws – a 17th century documentation of the Dutch Colonial Empire of Brazil – which, in turn, becomes the theater in which the Afro-Brazilian women Walker befriended emerge from and dominate that history of colonization and enslavement.
